95 or 96 and later have breakaway clutch in the starter gear train. If your compression release isn't working per your earlier post, that could be the problem. Try manually holding the compression release lever up while cranking, it just hold the exhaust vavle off it seat until there is some inertia in the engine while cranking and then closes.
